Join Renesas for a hands-on lab and learn how to easily add security to your next IoT design.

The need for security touches every product segment, from industrial controls to white goods to medical devices. The key in designing a secure product is to commit to designing in security from the beginning and finding the right balance between known threats and the security solutions to protect against those threats.

Creating a secure product requires a full set of security solutions. In this lab, we’ll review how Renesas RA MCUs offer all the components required to build a strong security solution for IoT applications. From secure element functionality with SP800-22 compliant TRG, RSA and ECC PKI to unlimited secure key storage with secure key installation. The RA FSP software is integrated with these MCU hardware features to provide integrated hardware support for cryptography and secure internet communication.

This hands-on lab is designed both to help our new customers get an introduction to Renesas Secure Crypto Engine 9, followed by secure key management techniques on RA MCUs, and for existing customers who want to see the latest features. The focus of the lab will be on the fundamental features of Secure Crypto Engine, understanding Root of Trust, secure key installation advantages and wrapped key installation use cases.

Lab objectives and outline:
  • Use the Secure Key Management Tool (SKMT) to create an AES key
  • Use Renesas Flash Programmer (RFP) to install a key
  • Create an FSP-based project (flat and TrustZone) to use an installed key to decrypt data
  • Encrypt a user image
  • Create user install keys with Renesas DLM server
The lab covers:
  • Introduction to Root of Trust
  • Introduction to Renesas RA MCU Security
    • Secure Crypto Engine 9 (SCE9)
  • SCE9 Associated Keys
  • Secure Key Installation Advantages
    • Advantages of Key Wrapping over Key Encryption
    • Advantages of Key Wrapping over MCU HUK
  • RA MCU Factory Boot Firmware
Attendees will receive or download:
  • RA4M3 development kit
  • Renesas FSP v4.5
  • Live instructors will provide dedicated support and assistance during the lab
System requirements:
  • PC running Windows 10 64-bit with at least one USB port
  • Expected skillset
    • C language and embedded programming
    • Usage of the Smart Configurator and IDE concepts
